Princeton Artist Brush Co.
Nearly 20 years ago, Howard Kaufman began a small brush business very near his home in Princeton, New Jersey. As President of one of the world’s largest and best known art supply manufacturers, Howard had gained a vast knowledge of brush-making and an understanding of the needs and desires of painters. He believed that by focusing on innovation and value, he would always have an appreciative audience for his products.
Enter Naohide Takamoto, third-generation of Japan’s revered Takamoto brush-making family. In fact, you may be interested to learn that Taklon hair was named for its creator – Takamoto.
The two worked together tirelessly to develop the best synthetic sable. Often copied, but never equaled, Princeton’s series 4050 faux-sable remains a flagship product. Artists love this high quality brush that is a true alternative to much more expensive natural hair brushes.
In the years since, Princeton has brought many unique products to artists. Princeton has led the market in new synthetic hair technologies and handle finishes. We have been at the lead in creating non-toxic coatings for handles, and the responsible sourcing of sustainable wood for our handles.
Committed to Real Value
Today, Princeton Artist Brush Co. is one of the largest brush-makers in North America. Since our start in 1992, artist brushes have been the sole focus of Princeton. Other brush companies make paint, paper, canvas, pastels and easels. Princeton makes one thing: the best quality, most fairly priced artist brushes available today.
Princeton will continue to innovate and maintain our obsession with value. We encourage you to compare our brushes with other brands. Our mission is to always deliver more brush for your money. It’s what we call “Real Value."

Princeton Artist Brush Co. is proud to be supportive of several arts-related charities. Two stand out especially for us because they involve children. Both are incredibly effective at bringing art making to underserved groups of children, one here in the US, the other in Africa.
We encourage you to get to know these organizations and be inspired, like we are, by the good work they are doing.
The Traveling Canvas, www.thetravelingcanvas.com, was started by 13 year old Tae Tae Davis in Miami, Florida. An artist herself, she was concerned when budget cuts in her school district caused the cancelling of art classes. In 2009, she wrote letters to 40 art supply manufacturers, including Princeton, and asked for support in the form of art materials to help with the budget for her school’s art programs. We and many others couldn’t say no to such a motivated, energetic young lady and she successfully raised $32,000 in her first effort. We are with Tae Tae for the long haul and expect our partnership to continue to bring art and joy to many people.
Cameron Cross of Brushing Out Poverty, www.brushoutpoverty.org, created a painting exchange between children in Winnepeg, Canada, and AIDs affected children in Africa. The pictures above show proud and happy Ugandan children, some who painted for the very first time that day with Cameron’s team.
Brush Out Poverty coined the clever phrase “brush pals” for the relationships he forms across continents with children exchanging artwork. The knowledge of a bigger world and the joy of creativity bring a tremendous benefit to all those involved.
