Artist Statement

In my artwork, I focus on the patterns and rhythms found in nature defined by light and shadow. Each painting or drawing represents a specific location, time of day, and season. I often return to the same location to look for variations of patterns and light as they change throughout the seasons.

The images in my paintings are from landscapes that I have studied and know intimately. My childhood was spent wandering through the woods, pastures, and streams of rural Southeast Texas. This exploration of the landscape created a lasting impression and continues to inform my work. My vision has also been shaped by the study of artists from the 19th and 20th centuries.

I feel a kinship with Romantic artists who used nature as a vehicle for the expression of emotion. Yet, like the Realist artists, I feel no need to idealize the natural word. The language of painting as defined by the early Abstract Expressionists has also been influential in my work. The techniques of painting and drawing are as important to me as the choice of imagery.
